Anorexia nervosa is a complex and potentially deadly eating disorder in which a person inflicts self-starvation, usually as a result of dissatisfaction of their body. 20 million women and 10 million men in the U.S. alone suffer from some type of eating disorder at some point during their life. With figures like those, it’s easy to understand why eating disorders are quickly becoming a devastating problem for Americans. Recent studies have shown that children, especially girls, as young as 6 years old are already concerning themselves with their weight and appearance. This insecurity tends to stay with them for most of their lives. With more and more people each day being affected with eating disorders, it’s important to learn of stories like this young woman’s; she shares her experience in hopes of shedding some light on the horrors that come with an eating disorder.
Anorexia is a particularly dangerous eating disorder, it is reported as having the highest mortality rate of any psychiatric disorders. Among girls and women aged 15-24 who suffer from anorexia, twelve times more of them will die from anorexia than from any other cause.
