Cameras Capture Rare Footage Of An Orangutan Birth. The Result? Phenomenal.

This incredibly rare footage of a Sumatran orangutan giving birth is simply phenomenal. What she does with her newborn afterwards is absolutely amazing.

This jaw-dropping video was shot at the Durrell Wildlife Park in Trinity, Jersey in the Channel Islands. How this Sumatran orangutan cared for her infant during and after birth was nothing short of astounding.

According to Wikipedia, “The Sumatran orangutan grows to about 1.4 m (4.6 ft) tall and 90 kg (200 lb) in males. Females are smaller, averaging 90 cm (3.0 ft) and 45 kg (99 lb). Compared to the Bornean species, Sumatran orangutans are thinner and have longer faces; their hair is longer with a paler red color.” So, this little fella may be tiny now, but it’s only a matter of time before this baby grows up big and strong.

Also, “Compared with the Bornean orangutan, the Sumatran orangutan tends to be more frugivorous and especially insectivorous. Preferred fruits include figs and jackfruits. It will also eat bird eggs and small vertebrates. Sumatran orangutans spend far less time feeding on the inner bark of trees.”
