Jenny Lake is a completely normal teenager. She is 17 years old and goes to high school in a small town called Pocatello in Idaho. Recently she made a new friend named Jason.
Jenny begins suffering from excruciating headaches. After several days of excruciating pain, she finally seeks medical treatment. At the checkup, the doctor finds a large object, about 1 inch in diameter (2 cm), inside her brain. Shortly after comes the devastating diagnosis: Jenni has cancer.
In order to live, she must undergo chemotherapy.
For her family and her friend Jason, the diagnosis is heart breaking, but they all stand behind her stoically.
Jenni then receives news that under normal circumstances would be wonderful: she is pregnant.
Even though Jenni is happy about the baby, she is faced with the hardest decision of her life. If she continues chemotherapy, the baby will die. But if she stops the chemotherapy, she will die herself. It is a painful life or death decision she must make.
Jenny makes the ultimate decision, to stop the chemotherapy, and 9 months later gives birth to little Chad Michael. Because of the decision she made to stop treatment in order to give her son life, she now risks losing her own. When Chad was born, Jenni grabs the midwife’s hand, pulls her close, and whispers: “I did it. I fulfilled my duty.”
6 days after giving birth, Jenny leaves the hospital. She wanted to bring Chad home to be close to him.
12 days after giving birth, Jenni passes away peacefully while cradling her son in her arms.
Her motherly love was so strong that she was willing to sacrifice her own life for the life of her son. That is the love that only a mother can feel for her child.
The ultimate sacrifice a Mother can make for their child.
