Dolly Parton Sings “Coat Of Many Colors”

Dolly wrote this song in 1969 and was released two years later reaching number four on the record charts. She was traveling on a tour bus as the song came to her and not having any paper close by she wrote it on the back of a dry cleaning receipt.

The sweet song “Coat Of Many Colors” tells of Dolly childhood and how her other stitched a coat for her made of rags given to the family. As she sewed it, her mother told Dolly the story of Joseph and his coat of many colors. Though other children made fun of her at school for wearing it, the coat was precious to Dolly and still is. It is on display in a museum at Dollywood along with the original receipt where she wrote the words to the song. Dolly has stated over the years this still remains her own favorite personal song.

The song concludes with a powerful message that we are only as poor as we choose to be – a beautiful reminder to be thankful for each and every blessing we have in our lives
