I was taught to appreciate every moment of my life, because your everything can change in the blink of an eye.
Dana Vulin, 28, of Perth, Australia had her entire life change completely when she suffered horrific third-degree burns on nearly 60% of her body — the result of an attack from a woman who was jealous that Dana had talked to her husband at a party. She told Dana she wanted to ruin her “pretty little face.”
Dana is one of those incredible people who did not let depression and fear set in, she continued on with her head held high.
After numerous reconstructive surgeries, Dana was finally able to take off her literal mask and reveal her new face. Dana isn’t concerned about looking different. As she told Australia’s Channel Seven’s Sunday Night, “I hope they see the scars. This is part of me now.”
Her transformation is absolutely incredible, but it’s her inner beauty and determination that we most respect.

Dana’s attacker grew jealous when she learned that Dana had talked to her estranged husband at a New Year’s Eve party. Dana is pictured here (on the left) before the attacks.
The jealous wife began to formulate a revenge plot, and in the meantime, she harassed Dana with threatening phone calls. She even said, “I’m going to ruin her pretty little face.”
The woman, Natalie Dimitrovska, broke into Dana’s apartment while under the influence of drugs. She soaked Dana in methylated spirits and set her ablaze. Dana could hear her laughing as she ran out.
The third-degree burns covered 64% of Dana’s body. Even her mother said she was left completely unrecognizable.
Dana admitted that, prior to the attacks, her life revolved around her looks. It was her source of pride.
For 30 months, as she healed, she was forced to wear this mask, which left her feeling “like a nothing and a no one.”
She even appeared in court wearing the mask to testify. Fortunately, her attacker was sentenced to 17 years in jail.
While battling to recover from her attack, Dana had to face another battle: A doctor informed her that she had cervical cancer.
Of course, she refused to give up. She underwent a surgery that removed the cancerous cells and she soon became cancer free, though the shock of the diagnosis still lingered.
Still, the mask haunted her. “It makes me feel like a faceless nothing. That’s the best way to describe it.”
Finally, after working every day to heal, Dana agreed to appear on a television news program to take off her mask and appear in a fashion catwalk on television.
She says, “It would’ve been easier to die, but I’ve never taken the easy road to anything…but if someone were to ask me how I feel about my body — I am damn proud of it.”
Knowing that her story could inspire others to find positivity and hope in the face of adversity, Dana prepared to reveal her new look.
When she removed the mask and showed off her fresh face to the world, she told the world to see beyond her looks.
She says, “I hope they’ll see strength, power, confidence, self respect, courage, and determination.”
Dana says, “I am a strong person, and more than anything that I’ve learnt in my burn is that I will never change and I know the person I am and I’m confident in the woman that I am.”
Dana is proof that to heal the outside, you must also heal the inside. Now she can begin to embrace the rest of her life.
